As we pass from the last day of 2017 to the first day of 2018, I suggest that we take time to do two things: Reconsider and Recommit.
It is valuable to look back and remember the events and choices we have made in the past year—to reconsider their value and significance.
In 2017 I experienced the passing of both my in-laws. After 66 years of marriage, they died 66 days apart, peacefully and without regrets. The memorial celebrations honored their lives, faithfully committed to God and to each other. What a great example for all who knew them! As believers in Jesus our Savior, what joy to realize “the best is yet to come!”
By choice, I have also experienced an entire year without doing any baby deliveries, overnight call, or surgery (robotic or other). That was a BIG change for me! While I loved the life I had before, I find I am thoroughly enjoying the life I have now! I enjoy the challenge of studying and mastering new subjects and material, and I am enriched by the many Michiganders I am meeting and getting to know.
As a nation, we have experienced the results of a presidential election that many considered improbable (if not impossible). The reality is that God is the One who raises up and puts down leaders. I have committed to pray for my president, Donald Trump, daily.
As I reconsider the year 2017 and look forward to the year 2018, I recommit myself to faithfulness to my Lord, my wife, my family, my country and its constitution, and the people of the State of Michigan. I hope to have the privilege of serving as Governor, keeping these commitments and always putting People First, Not Politics.
Sincerely desiring the best for you and your family in the coming year,
